Still teaching and conducting research with students as professor emerita, Dr. Putnam has worked as a professor in the Psychological Science Department at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY since 2001. She began her teaching career as a private piano instructor and then a soccer coach at Erie Community College in Williamsville, NY from 1993 to 1995 before becoming a research assistant in the psychology Ph.D. program at the University at Buffalo from 1995 to 1999. She received a behavioral neuroscience postdoctoral fellowship from the University at Buffalo between 1999 and 2000, and went on to hold a position there as a visiting assistant professor between 2000 and 2001. She climbed the ranks of assistant, associate, and then full professor in psychology at Canisius College during the years from 2001 to 2018. During this time, she also held various service positions, including Chair of the Department, at the school and has worked with the Institute for Autism Research and the Penn-York Undergraduate Research Association.
Dr. Putnam earned an Associate of Science in general studies from Erie Community College in 1993. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from Canisius College in 1995, and then a Doctor of Philosophy from the University at Buffalo in 1999. During this time, she devoted herself to a number of civic causes. She was a soccer coach for the Akron Soccer League from 1983 to 1994, and the choir director and organist for the First Baptist Church of Akron from 1983 to 2006. Additionally, she served as director of the music ministry there from 1985 until 2006. She has also held the posts of music and choral director for the Wales Center Community Baptist Church since 2008.
Dr. Putnam founded and continues to direct the WNY Sibshop at Canisius College which provides support for siblings of children with special needs. Most recently, she developed the Bachelor of Science degree program for the Department of Psychological Sciences at Canisius College. She has been awarded a number of accolades for her achievements, starting with the Milton Plezur Excellence in Teaching Award, the Chancellor's Award for Graduate School Teaching Excellence, and the Outstanding Instructor Recognition Award in 1999. She then received the UPA/Psi Chi Excellence in Teaching Award from the University at Buffalo in 2001, followed by the Lay Person of the Year Award from the First Baptist Church of Akron in 2003.
In addition, Dr. Putnam was awarded the Peter Canisius Distinguished Professorship Award by Canisius College in 2007. Furthermore, she has been listed in the 64th edition of Who's Who in America and multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women as well as numerous other publications of distinction.
