For more than four decades, Dr. Worden has worked in various capacities at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. He currently holds the role of consultant in the Federal Research Division, a role he has fulfilled since 2008. Prior to taking on this position, he was a chief operating officer in the Office of Scholarly Programs from 2006 to 2007, the chief of the Federal Research Division from 1998 to 2007, a role he considers to be the highlight of his career, acting special assistant to the director for Collections and Services from 2004 to 2006, and acting chief of the Asian Division from 2002 to 2003.
In the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, Dr. Worden served as acting chief from 1997 to 1998. He also served as section head from 1985 to 1998, unit supervisor from 1982 to 1985, senior research analyst from 1981 to 1982, and research analyst from 1973 to 1981. Prior to working in the Library of Congress, Dr. Worden was with the U.S. Peace Corps in Washington, DC, as an applicant screener and coder from 1967 to 1968 and a statistical analyst from 1968 to 1970. Aside from these primary endeavors, he was the editor of a genealogy newsletter and served on the executive board with the Worden Family Association, Inc.
With a lifelong interest in history and biography, Dr. Worden began his academic pursuits at St. Bonaventure University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history, cum laude, in 1967. He continued his studies at Georgetown University, where he earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Asian studies in 1969 and 1972, respectively. He also served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973.
Dr. Worden maintains his professional involvement in the industry by holding membership with such organizations as the Maryland Historical Society, the Association for Asian Studies, and the Annapolis History Consortium.
Civically, Dr. Worden was involved as a secretary and treasurer of the Annapolis Preservation Trust, Inc., from 1987 to 1995, as secretary from 2000 to 2006, and as president from 1995 to 1997. From 1983 to 1986, he acted as the chairman of the Board of Election Supervisors in Annapolis, MD. Additionally, he is a member of the City of Annapolis Heritage Commission and has been an archivist at St. Mary's Church in Annapolis since 1982.
As an established professional, Dr. Worden has helped produce numerous creative works, including "China: A Country Study," "North Korea: A Country Study," "Indonesia: A Country Study," "Bangladesh: A Country Study," "Mongolia: A Country Study," "India: A Country Study," "Japan: A Country Study" and "Bhutan: A Country Study." In 2003, he wrote "Saint Mary's Church in Annapolis, Maryland: A Sesquicentennial History, 1853-2003." In 1995, he served as co-author and editor of "The Veterans Benefits Administration: An Organizational History, 1776-1994."
In 1986, Dr. Worden co-authored and co-edited "China and the Third World-Champion or Challenger?" Looking forward, he has three forthcoming books, which will add to his collection of 14 books, over 20 journal articles, side bars and book chapters, and 12 digital publications.
For all of his professional achievements, Dr. Worden was honored as a joint recipient of the Living Legend Award from the City of Annapolis in 2012, the Marjorie Murray Bridgman Award from the Anne Arundel County Trust for Preservation in 2014, and the Heritage Leadership Award from Four Rivers Heritage Area in 2015. In 2016, he earned the "Annie" Award for Historic Arts from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County. He held a fellowship with Georgetown University from 1970 to 1971.
