With 40 years of practiced industry experience, Dr. Schwartz retired from the field of materials science in 2004, most recently having served as director of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Arlington, Virginia. At the start of his career, he taught materials science at Northwestern University and served as the director for the university's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center until 1984. Following this opportunity, he gained executive expertise through work with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Associated Universities Inc. and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Additionally, Dr. Schwartz has consulted for a number of companies throughout his career, including Argonne National Laboratory from 1965 to 1979.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Schwartz pursued an education at Northwestern University, earning his Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1959. Following this accomplishment, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in material science from Northwestern University in 1964. Though he is retired, Dr. Schwartz maintains affiliations with professional organizations such as the ASM International Materials Information Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers and many others, in order to keep abreast of developments in his field.
In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Schwartz is proud to have fostered a number of programs in computational science through various universities and the United States Air Force over the years, despite it not being his area of specialty. Utilizing his range of knowledge, he has also been a regular contributor of articles to professional journals and co-authored the book "Diffraction from Materials" alongside Jerome B. Cohen in 1987. For his professional accomplishments, he has been honored many times. He was recipient of the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive for outstanding government service in 1990 and elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1994. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Schwartz has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
