With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Brod was a member of the journalism faculty at Northern Illinois University from 1969 to 1992. In addition to his primary role, he served as chair of the department from 1976 to 1981 and again from 1987 to 1992. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a member of the journalism faculty at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 1960 to 1969. Earlier in his career, Dr. Brod was a reporter and editor with the Montezuma Valley Journal from 1958 to 1960.
Dr. Brod was inspired to pursue a career in the field from an early age, having always had an interest in sports but finding that his talents were more suited to writing about them instead of playing. He began his career with his high school newspaper, later obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Southeast Missouri State University in 1954. He then joined the United States Army, serving to the rank of corporal from 1955 to 1957. He subsequently returned to his studies at the University of Missouri, completing a Master of Arts in 1958. He concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota in 1968.
A respected leader in the field, Dr. Brod has been active with a number of organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He is a member of the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors and the Society of Professional Journalists. In addition, Dr. Brod is affiliated with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Throughout his career, Dr. Brod has been recognized for his contributions, having received an Excellence in Teaching Award from Northern Illinois University. The Colorado Press Association gave him a First Place Journalism Award, the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors named an award in his honor, and Northern Illinois University named a journalism scholarship after him. Dr. Brod has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the Midwest.
