Thomas Perfetti accepted the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana State University of Pennsylvania in 1995.

Since retiring from active professional pursuits in 2004, Dr. Perfetti has been the owner of Perfetti & Perfetti LLC. Prior to this appointment, he worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a principal scientist from 1991 to 2004, as a master scientist from 1986 to 1991, a senior staff scientist from 1984 to 1986, a senior research and development chemist from 1981 to 1984 and a senior research chemist in 1979. His first position was at this company as a chemist in Winston-Salem in 1977.
Dr. Perfetti grew up with a fascination for science as everyone in his family is a chemist. When he began his studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1974, he began taking biology classes but eventually switched back to chemistry and earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. He continued academics at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1977. Additionally, he is certified as a chemistry professor.
Now, as an established professional, Dr. Perfetti contributes scientific articles to professional journals and has written chapters for books and written entire books. Moreover, he holds approximately 50 patents, including for A.1. Sauce. Furthermore, he is recognized as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists.
Dr. Perfetti has been acknowledged for his many accomplishments in the form of accolades such as the Tobacco Science Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, the CORESTA Prize in 2010, and the World Class Innovator Award in 1995. Likewise, he accepted the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana State University of Pennsylvania in 1995 and the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1997.
Looking back on all of these achievements, Dr. Perfetti notes that working together is much more fun than working alone as working together always accomplishes far more. He appreciates the ability to bounce ideas off of each other and help each other out.
