He was the head of the department of surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1989 and professor of the department of surgery at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago from 1977 to 1989. His first professional role was as an assistant professor in the department of surgery with the University of Illinois College of Medicine from 1968 until 1972, at which time he became an associate professor.
Aside from his primary roles, Dr. Moss has served as a visiting professor at numerous institutions, including the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, IL, in 1991, the Seton Medical Center of the Seton Healthcare Family in Austin, TX, in 1990, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, in 1989, The Ohio State University in 1988, and the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY, in 1986.
As chairman, Dr. Moss has served on the Plasma and Plasma Products Committee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute with the National Institutes of Health in 1979. Other chairman roles he has fulfilled include with the department of surgery of the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago from 1977 to 1989, the Site Visit Review Group in 1977, and on the Review Panel on Contract Proposals with the National Institutes of Health in 1975. Additionally, he was the chairman of the department of surgery at the Cook County Hospital, now known as the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System in Chicago from 1972 to 1977.
Dr. Moss was on the Ad Hoc Transition Committee with the American Blood Commission and served as the chief of service at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in 1989. Also at Michael Reese Hospital, he served as a trustee in 1981. In 1988, he was on the executive committee and coordinator committee with the National Blood Education Program, on the technical advisory task force with the American Hospital Association, and was involved with the Small Business Innovation Research.
In 1987, Dr. Moss was on the planning committee for discussing key blood problems with the National Heart and Lung Institute. That same year, he was on the panel on research opportunities with the Office of Naval Research Program and was on the planning committee for Consensus. In 1985, he was the vice president of the American Blood Commission. He also served on the NIH blood diseases and resources advisory committee from 1984 to 1988. He has also served as a consultant for the institute and a member of the board of directors in 1983.
Also in 1983, Dr. Moss acted as a delegate to Third Joint U.S.-USSR Symposium. He also served on the liaison committee of graduate medical education at the American Medical Association in 1979, provided medical research service for the Merit Review Board of VA from 1978 to 1981, and served on the advisory committee for the Blood Resources Work Group in 1978. Two years prior, he was involved with the Program Project Site Visit.
From 1972 to 1977, Dr. Moss held the role of director of surgical research with the Hektoen Institute for Medical Research in the Cook County Hospital. Two years before accepting this position, he was their attending surgeon in the department of surgery. He served on the Ad Hoc Subcommittee and the Ad Hoc Study Section with the NAE in 1970.
From 1968 to 1970, Dr. Moss was the assistant chief of surgical services at the VA West Side Hospital, now known as the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, in Chicago. Two years prior to this appointment, he was appointed to numerous committees with the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. He was a tutor in surgery at the Manchester Royal Infirmary at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in England in 1964 and a tutor in anatomy at Harvard Medical School in 1961.
In addition to serving as a consultant in the field, Dr. Moss is a guest lecturer and participant in numerous meetings and symposiums, is involved with numerous other committees for various medical organizations, and worked with the Transfusion Medicine Academy Awards Program. He has shared his knowledge through contributing articles to numerous professional journals and chapters to books.
Before entering the field, Dr. Moss pursued a formal education at The Ohio State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1956 and a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, in 1960. He continued his studies at Massachusetts General Hospital with The General Hospital Corporation in Boston, MA, where he was an intern from 1960 to 1961 and a resident from 1961 to 1965. Additionally, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Inc., and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Illinois. After graduating, he served with the United States Navy in Vietnam from 1965 to 1968.
Dr. Moss maintains affiliation with numerous prestigious organizations as a representative, including with the American Blood Commission of the American College of Surgeons since 1977. He was a representative of the National Society for Medical Research with the American Surgical Association from 1984 to 1988, the Society of University Surgeons from 1973 to 1977, and the Central Surgical Association from 1973 to 1977.
With the Association for Academic Surgery, Dr. Moss was the president-elect from 1974 to 1975 and president from 1975 to 1976. He acted as the chairman of their membership selection committee from 1973 to 1975 and on the executive council from 1977 to 1979. With the Shock Society, he served as president from 1987 to 1988 and chairman of the planning and program committees in 1986. Moreover, with the American College of Surgeons, he was on the preoperative and postoperative care committee from 1975 to 1983, a speaker at various symposiums, a member of various committees, and a fellow.
Dr. Moss served on the committee of the West North Central Region with the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract from 1978 to 1982, as a faculty advisor for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society from 1972 to 1973, and as an appointed associate of the examiner committee with the American Board of Surgery, Inc. He also maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Moss is a member of the American Trauma Society, the International Society of Blood Transfusion, the Surgical Biology Club II, the National Society for Medical Research, and the Collegium Internationale Chirurgiae Digestivae. Beyond these affiliations, he holds membership with the Societe Internationale de Chirurgie and Sigma Xi.
For all of his accomplishments throughout his extensive career, Dr. Moss has been honored as a grantee of Northfield Laboratories from 1985 to 1989, the National Institutes of Health in 1969 and again from 1983 to 1984, and the U.S. Public Health Service in 1973. He was also a grantee of UpJohn in 1974 and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1974 to 1977.
Dr. Moss was a grantee of the United States Army from 1971 to 1974 and again from 1975 to 1978, as well as of the United States Navy from 1969 to 1984. He considers a highlight of his career to be his work in heading the research program with the Marines entering Vietnam in 1965, for which he was awarded the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal With Combat V.
In 1981, Dr. Moss received the Stitt Lecturer Award from AMSUS, the Society of Federal Health Professionals. In 1962, he was a teaching fellow of Harvard Medical School.
