Since 1998, Dr. Strain has been a professor emeritus of biology at Duke University in Durham, NC. Prior to holding this role, he worked at the university as a professor from 1976 to 1998 and an associate professor from 1969 to 1976. His first professional role was as an assistant professor at the University of California, Riverside, from 1964 to 1969. Aside from his primary endeavors, he served as the director of Duke University Phytotron from 1979 to 1989. He also was a principal scientist in the U.S. Department of Energy from 1992 to 1998.

His research on the effects of increasing carbon dioxide on vegetation progressed from physiological studies of individual species in growth chambers to multiple species interactions in complex studies of ecosystems under control. Collaboration with scientists of many institutions and disciplines led to the development of the Forest Atmosphere Carbon Transfer and Storage (FACTS-1) facility at Duke University.
As a child growing up hunting and fishing in the wilderness of Wyoming, Dr. Strain learned that he could predict where to find wildlife by studying habitat and behavior of plants and animals. In college he learned that the science of ecology existed and decided to make it his lifetime endeavor.
Dr. Strain's formal education was interrupted by two years in the Army National Guard (1953 – 1954) and three years active duty in Korea (1955 – 1958) with the Army Security Agency.
He attended Casper College earning an Associate of Arts in 1958. He continued his studies at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD where he received a Bachelor of Science in education in 1960. In 1961 he earned a Master of Science from the University of Wyoming.
Dr. Strain completed his formal education at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in plant ecology in 1964. His major professor was a plant ecologist with primary interest is measuring physiological responses to determine the mechanisms leading to plants' origins and evolution.
Civically, Dr. Strain was involved with the Lions Club International from 1999 to 2006, Sister Cities International from 2008 to 2017, and Rotary International from 2010 to 2014, and he was a Rotary e-Club founding member in 2016. He also holds membership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Botanical Society of America and the Ecological Society of America, where he served as editor from 1988 to 1991. He was also involved with the American Institute of Biological Sciences as president in 1988 and the American Foundation of Biological Sciences as a founding chairman in 1987.
Dr. Strain was involved as an editor of Vegetation & Environment in 1973. He wrote "Direct Effects of Increasing CO2 on Vegetation" in 2005 and co-wrote 213 articles in ecological research from 1963 to 2005. When he isn't involved with his professional roles, he enjoys photography, fishing and boating. He has previously been featured in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
