With 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Jenkins has been recognized as curator emeritus of the Portland Art Museum since 2004. Prior to his retirement, he was chief curator of the museum from 1998 to 2001, and curator of Asian art from 1987 to 2003. From 1975 to 1987, he was director of the museum, and from 1974 to 1975, he was curator. Earlier in his career, Mr. Jenkins was an associate curator of oriental art at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1969 to 1974, having been assistant curator of the Portland Art Museum from 1960 to 1969 and a museum assistant from 1954 to 1956.
Mr. Jenkins began his career as a student at the University of Chicago, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. He later returned to his studies with the school, earning a Master of Arts in 1970. The former chair of the cultural affairs committee of the Japan-America Society of Oregon, he is a member of the Society for Japanese Arts, the Association for Asian Studies, the Japanese Art Society of America, and the International House of Japan.
In addition to his primary roles, Mr. Jenkins has been a leading voice in his community. He was a member of the gallery advisory committee of the Asia House Gallery, an application reviewer for the National Endowment of the Humanities, and a lecturer at various museums and art organizations. He served on the Pittock Mansion Advisory Committee, as chair of the Northwest Regional China Council, on the board of directors of Classical Chinese Garden, and on the art selection committee of the Performing Arts Center. Mr. Jenkins has authored several exhibition catalogues and essays in the industry.
Throughout his career, Mr. Jenkins has been recognized for his accomplishments. He received the Uchiyama Susumu Memorial Award from the Japanese Ukiyo-e Society, the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold Rays and Rosette from the Japanese Government, and the Flying Horse Community Service Award from the Northwest China Council.
