Manfred P. Wolff, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Wolff, an ecologist, environmental scientist and consultant, retired as a professor of geology at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, in 2004. An expert in coastal and environmental geology, coastal erosion and barrier island mitigation, Dr. Wolff began his career in academia in 1967, teaching on the New York campus for 37 wonderful years.

Throughout Dr. Wolff's career, he had conducted extensive research and was able to successfully provide evidence of landward barrier island migration for beaches in Long Island, NY. He also researched and provided lateral offset of barrier island splits at Long Island inlets. Dr. Wolff has been recognized for joining others in the recording video of Little Pike's Inlet at Westhampton Beach between December 1992 and April 1993.

Dr. Wolff is a member and former co-chairman of the Nassau Science Exploration Day Committee and former Executive Secretary of the New York State Geological Association for 12 years between 1978 and 1990. He is a longtime member of the New York State Council of Professional Geologists, the Society of Economic Geologists, the Geological Society of America and the Explorers Club of New York City. Locally involved, Dr. Wolff was a member of the state of emergency preparedness commission and science advisory committee in Albany, member of the citizens advisory committee with the Long Island Regional Planning Board and member of the Wastewater Management Study in Hauppauge, NY.

Honored by being named Grand Marshall of Hofstra University, Dr. Wolff not only taught on the university campus for nearly four decades but is also an alumnus. Completing a Bachelor of Science at Hofstra University in 1961, he then earned a Master of Science at the University of Rochester in 1963 and Doctor of Philosophy in geology at Cornell University in 1967. Dr. Wolff also served four years in the U.S. Army Reserve between 1956 and 1960 and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.

Born in New York City, Dr. Wolff first became intrigued by the subject of geology as a teenager. Interested in the outdoors, he would often go hiking with friends in the Catskills and the Bear Mountain area and ultimately on the Appalachian Trail from New York through New England. He especially enjoyed doing Catskill research and going on field trips to the beaches and barrier islands. Excelling in college, he received a scholarship from the University of Rochester in 1961 and 1962, followed by a second scholarship from Cornell University between 1963 and 1967. Dr. Wolff was also awarded with a Wilson P. Foss senior fellowship by the New York State Geological Survey from 1963 and 1964 and a grant by the Penrose Bequest from the Geological Society of America in 1966. He has notably been included in the 59th edition of Who's Who in America for his work.

Married to Suzanne Charlene Mosier since 1988, Dr. Wolff and she share two sons. Since retiring in 2004, he has spent more time outdoors by going hiking, bicycling and travelling. He also enjoys taking photography and working with computers and printers.
