Dr. Lai initially earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the National Taiwan University in Taipei, in 1959. After going on to earn a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1963 he received his Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from the same in 1969. He began his career by serving as a research specialist for the chemistry department at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he worked from 1969 to 1973. Now celebrated in his field for his numerous accomplishments, he also worked as a principal research scientist, senior principal research scientist and a staff scientist at the Honeywell International Inc. Physical Sciences Center before attaining his most recent position as president of Lai Laboratories Inc. in Burnsville, Minnesota, in 1988.
Though he retired from Lai Laboratories Inc. in 2006, Dr. Lai continued to lecture for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research of the National Institutes of Health until 2009. His creative accomplishments in his field are myriad, and include "Polymer for Electronic Applications," which was published in 1989, as well as numerous articles on polymer chemistry, dental materials and solid state chemistry in professional journals. Dr. Lai has conducted significant research in his specialty area, and he holds 11 patents in electronic and dental materials.
Celebrating a career punctuated by accomplishments, Dr. Lai has been the recipient of an array of awards in his field. Notably, he received the H.W. Sweatt Award from Honeywell International Inc. in 1980, and he also received the Small Business Innovation Research Award from the United States Department of Health and Human Services several times during his work's duration. Along with these recognitions, he has been the recipient of grants from Minnesota Tec., Inc. of the Minnesota State Government as well as the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Lai's achievements extend beyond the scope of his professional sphere, and he participated on the board of directors for the Chinese American Association of Minnesota from 1977 to 1979. He has also contributed to the Minnesota chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America several times, demonstrating an enthusiasm for civic involvement. Interested in maintaining connections in his field, he is a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials and the American Institute of Chemists and maintains memberships with such organizations as the American Chemical Society and the American Association of Dental Research. Dr. Lai has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
