James E. Macdonald was named an Emeritus Professor by Weber State upon his retirement in 2015.

Dr. Macdonald attended Indiana University as a graduate student in philosophy in 1972 and served there as a Teaching Assistant until 1975, at which time he moved to Indianapolis and began teaching his own courses in philosophy at the Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUI) joint campus. He taught there as an Adjunct Professor until 1981 while also attending Indiana University Law School in Indianapolis until his graduation in 1981, at which time he began work for a year as a lawyer for the Legal Aid Society. In 1982 he accepted an appointment as an Assistant Professor at Weber State University (WSU) in Ogden, UT, where he taught until his retirement in 2015. He was promoted there through the academic ranks from Assistant to Associate Professor, and was made a full Professor of Business Administration in 1990.He was named an Emeritus Professor by Weber State upon his retirement in 2015. It was during his time at WSU that he served on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and also served as Chairman of the Appointment, Promotion, Academic Freedom Committee for the university. His specialty is in business law, but he has also taught business ethics, philosophy, and economics alongside the law.
Dr. Macdonald earned a Bachelor of Science from Eastern Illinois University in 1972. He then attended Indiana University to obtain four additional degrees, including a Master of Arts from the History and Philosophy of Science Department, a Doctor of Philosophy (based on a translation and commentary on a work by 19th century German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche) from the Philosophy Department, Master of Business Administration, and Doctor of Jurisprudence, sequentially. He was admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana in 1981 and the state of Utah seven years later, and served as president of the Rocky Mountain Business Law Association in 1986, as well as a member of the American Business Law Association. He has also contributed numerous articles to professional journals and is listed in the eighth edition of Who's Who in American Law and the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West.
