With 65 years of medical experience to his credit, Dr. Parkerson is a tenured professor in the department of community and family medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine and an adjunct professor in the department of epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina. After completing internships and residencies at Duke University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital at Emory University, he practiced general medicine in Winder, Georgia for 18 years. He joined the Duke faculty 44 years ago to teach and do research, and is still working full-time.
An expert in his field, Dr. Parkerson holds a Bachelor of Science in medicine and a Doctor of Medicine from Duke University School of Medicine as well as a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. Dr. Parkerson is grateful for the outstanding doctors who have influenced his path in life, including Dr. Amos Johnson, Dr. Eugene Stead, and Dr. Harvey Estes in North Carolina, and Dr. Willis Hurst and Dr. Faust Durden in Georgia.
In order to remain active in the field, Dr. Parkerson has been affiliated with the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, and the North American Primary Care Research Group. Previously, he has been a member of multiple local, state and national medical associations, as well as the World Organization of Family Doctors. Also, Dr. Parkerson has been dedicated to philanthropic and community efforts through such organizations as the Georgia Council for Family Practice Education and the Lincoln Community Health Center.
For his excellence in the field, Dr. Parkerson has been celebrated many times. In addition to earning the Curtis G. Hames Research Award through the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, he accepted the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians and the Honorary Physician Assistant Award from Duke University School of Medicine. In the coming years, Dr. Parkerson intends to continue sharing his knowledge of the field with the next generation of up-and-coming medical professionals.
