Michael Benjamin Aiello was named California State Teacher of the Year, which was a transformational moment because it allowed him to serve on the first ever California commission standards committee.

Drawing upon more than 35 years of practiced industry experience, Mr. Aiello retired from his role as a classroom teacher at San Luis Obispo High School, where he started in 1970. Throughout his lengthy career, he has had many highlights; however, having students return and speak upon the difference he has made in their lives has always been the most outstanding. In particular, one of his students had intended on becoming a software engineer. After taking Mr. Aiello's classes in anatomy and physiology, she changed her career path, and ultimately fell in love as a result of her actions. Additionally, Mr. Aiello was named California State Teacher of the Year, which was a transformational moment for him because it allowed him to serve on the first ever California commission standards committee.
An expert in his field, Mr. Aiello holds a Bachelor of Arts in zoology and a Master of Arts in cellular and organismal biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with several organizations, including the American Association of Physics Teachers, of which he is a licentiate. He also worked for the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning, as well as the Commission for Teacher Credentialing, which rewrote the standards for the California teaching credential programs throughout the state.
For his outstanding accomplishments, Mr. Aiello has been honored with the Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher through Sigma Xi, the National Educator Award through the Milken Family Foundation Award, and a Central Coast Outstanding Educator Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Likewise, the California State Department of Education gave him a Certificate of Recognition and Commendation. Looking ahead, Mr. Aiello intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
