Mary Doughten's proudest moments came when she was one of four people who convinced Kent State University in 1961 to conduct classes in New Philadelphia High School.

NEW PHILADELPHIA, OH, December 12, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mary Doughten has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Doughten began her career as a social worker with the Children's Services of Cleveland in 1947. She then traveled south to work with the same organization in San Antonio, TX from 1948 to 1949. In 1962, she began working as an English teacher at Indian Valley High School in Gnadenhutten, OH. In 1966, she transferred to New Philadelphia High School in New Philadelphia, OH to teach English and sociology until she retired in 1986.

Prior to her professional roles, Ms. Doughten earned a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN in 1945, majoring in sociology, psychology, and English. At that time, there were not many career paths available for women aside from becoming a teacher, secretary, nurse, or social worker. Since she could not become a lawyer like she had initially desired, she went into social work since it seemed the most interesting field open to her. She went on to obtain a Master of Science in social work from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1947 and then earned a further bachelor's degree in education at Kent State University in 1967.

Ms. Doughten's proudest moments came when she was one of four people who convinced Kent State University in 1961 to conduct classes in New Philadelphia High School. She was chairperson of a committee of AAUW and Chamber of Commerce members who persuaded voters to approve a levy for a permanent campus in 1968. Today, Kent State Tuscarawas is the only Kent State campus to be self-sufficient with its own board of directors. Ms. Doughten also was in the founding group for a tri-county vocational school. In the field of mental health, she was on the committee that supported establishing a mental health center. All of these establishments still exist. Ms. Doughten has been chairperson, secretary and board member of the Tuscarawas County Kent State Foundation. She is also a board member of the Chestnut Society of Kent State University, the Homeless Shelter, Tuscarawas County Job and Family Services as well as the Tuscarawas County Retired Teacher Association and was a member of the state community college board. Her volunteer work for many organizations includes the Presbyterian Church as a deacon, Tuscarawas County Democratic Women, Hospice, College Club, the Arts Council, Union Hospital Auxiliary, and Homeless Shelter among numerous others.

Ms. Doughten was awarded the Martha Holden Jennings Scholarship from 1975 to 1976. In 1978, she received the Mental Health Award for Community and Professional Services. She went on to receive a number of honors decades later, such as WJER's Woman of the Year in 2002, the Retired Teacher of the Year Award from the Quaker Foundation in 2005, and the Zeisberger-Heckewelder Award from the Tuscarawas County Historical Society in 2008. She is listed in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
