Dr. William K. Purves has been recognized as professor emeritus of Harvey Mudd College since 1996.

With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Purves has been recognized as professor emeritus of Harvey Mudd College since 1996. Prior to his retirement, he was the Stuart Mudd professor of biology from 1977 to 1995, as well as chair of the department of computer science from 1985 to 1990 and of the department of biology from 1985 to 1995. From 1979 to 1985, he was an adjunct professor of plant physiology with the University of California, Riverside, and from 1973 to 1977, he was a professor of biology and head of the biological science group at the University of Connecticut. Earlier in his career, Dr. Purves held a number of roles with the University of California, Santa Barbara, including chair of biological sciences from 1972 to 1973, professor of biology from 1970 to 1973, associate professor of biochemistry from 1965 to 1970, and assistant professor of botany from 1961 to 1965.
Dr. Purves began his career as a student at the California Institute of Technology, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1956. He continued his studies at Yale University, completing a Master of Science in 1957 and earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1959. From 1959 to 1960, he was a postdoctoral fellow with the National Science Foundation at the University of Tübingen, and from 1960 to 1961, he was a postdoctoral fellow with the National Cancer Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Purves served in a senior postdoctoral fellowship with the National Science Foundation at the University of London in 1967.
A respected voice in his areas of expertise, Dr. Purves has been an active leader in his community. The former vice president and science director of The Mona Group LLC, he was the senior author of seven books and a member of the writing staff of one book. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of Sigma Xi.
Throughout his career, Dr. Purves has been recognized for his achievements. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West. In addition, he has been awarded numerous grants from the National Science Foundation.
