Dr. Carey spent 36 years in academic neurosurgery at the Louisiana State University Medical School, New Orleans. He began his academic career in 1970 as an assistant professor of neurosurgery and achieved full professorship in 1978. Owing to his service in Vietnam as an Army neurosurgeon, the main thrust of Dr. Carey's academic research has involved results of and problems associated with war neurosurgery. He took this interest to the laboratory and his laboratory did missile wound and brain trauma research for the Army for 13 years. Prior to this, however, on a sabbatical leave Dr. Carey studied with Professor Hugh Davson at King's College, London working on cerebrospinal fluid physiology. Clinically, Dr. Carey did general neurosurgery but in his last 15 years at LSU he developed a special interest in epilepsy neurosurgery. Following hurricane Katrina and the medical decimation of New Orleans, Dr. Carey accepted an invitation to become Chief of Neurosurgery at the Manhattan VA Hospital and remained there from 2006 to 2010. While at the Manhattan VA Hospital he was also a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the NYU-Langone Medical Center.
In Dr. Carey's opinion technical expertise is a sine qua non for the successful surgeon. Success with patients, however, involves more than this. The surgeon must keep the interests of the patient uppermost. Consequently, the basic mindset of the surgeon is critical. As much of this is gained from his or her mentors, whose philosophy on patient treatment will be permanently incorporated into the surgeon's thinking, the surgeon's training program is very important.
The surgeon must keep an open mind concerning different surgical solutions to neurosurgical problems and keep abreast of neurosurgical advances. The more appropriate solution may change over time. Neurosurgical conferences where the issues are discussed with peers and residents are invaluable. Residents must be supported. Though substantial people, they are in a fragile time in their lives trying to learn and assimilate a demanding field, often while simultaneously starting, a family.
Patients are fellow human beings in a vulnerable position. The surgeon must help them or their family members decide for or against a particular procedure. Personal integrity and intellectual honesty of the surgeon is paramount. This includes incorporating the surgeon's own results for the particular operation in the recommendation.
What makes an academic neurosurgeon? Besides chance, the great satisfaction in teaching those younger surgical and clinical skills. Curiosity about the unknown often plays a part. The academic is in a milieu which allows him or her to try and answer either clinical or basic science questions.
Dr. Carey served in Vietnam as a neurosurgeon at the 312th-91stEvacuation Hospital in Chu Lai, 1968-1969 and afterwards was Chief of Neurosurgery at the Army's William Beaumont General Hospital, El Paso. He remained in the Army Reserve for 25 years attaining the rank of Colonel. He was Chief of Neurosurgery at the 148th Evacuation Hospital in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. For his Army service Dr. Carey was awarded the Legion of Merit, 2 bronze stars, a purple heart, an Army commendation medal and the humanitarian medal.
Dr. Carey graduated from Yale University in 1956 (BA-English Literature) and from Cornell University Medical College in 1960. He took his post graduate surgical and neurosurgical training at the University of Minnesota, finishing in 1967. During his neurosurgical residency Dr. Carey earned a Master's Degree in Neurosurgery studying the problem of brain abscesses. This led to an early academic interest in brain infections.
Dr. Carey is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Immediately following his neurosurgical training Dr. Carey entered private practice in Hartford, CT, but during Vietnam service determined that an academic career would be more fulfilling.
Dr. Carey has published 85 papers in the areas of war neurosurgery, experimental brain trauma, brain and spinal infections cerebrospinal fluid physiology, and war neurosurgical history.
Dr. Carey has been a member of many medical and neurosurgical organizations; the American Medical Association (which awarded him jointly with his wife, Betty, their Medal of Valor for his fight against animal zealots who would end animal-based biomedical research), the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Neurosurgical Society of America, the Society of Neurological Surgeons and the Society of University Neurosurgeons.
Dr. Carey has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care.
