With a career in medicine that has lasted nearly 50 years, Dr. Laurence Maurice Demers currently holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus with the M.S. Hershey Medical Center of The Pennsylvania State University, having retired in 2010 after decades of teaching at the university. For many years he served admirably as a medical educator, biomedical researcher, editor, clinical biochemist, and endocrinologist, establishing himself as a leader and an innovator in the field. His research has focused on biochemical endocrinology, laboratory automation, metabolic bone disease, and breast cancer. His work in breast cancer research led to the development of aromatase inhibitors, which are now part of the standard treatment for patients with breast cancer. He has published more than 700 papers, including 57 chapters, and has edited seven books.
Born to parents Laurence Onezime Demers and Doris Corrine (Goulet) Demers, he developed an interest in medicine and science as a young man. He completed his undergraduate education in 1960 at Merrimack College, and then from 1961 to 1965 he served at the rank of Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. He subsequently attended the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center to pursue a PhD, which he completed in 1970. Afterwards, he spent two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the prestigious Harvard Medical School. Later in his career, he joined the faculty at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, as a Visiting Professor in the Nuffield John Radcliff Hospital.
In 1973 he began teaching at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania State University, where he would spend a majority of his career. In 1982 he was named a full professor, and in 1997 he was named a distinguished professor, a title he held until his retirement from the institution in 2010. Currently, Dr. Demers is the Senior Scientific Advisor to Prescient Medicine, and is also on the board of directors of Autogenomics, Inc. He formerly served as a consultant at Robert Wood Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute, and on the board of directors of dBi Laboratories Inc. He has served on the editorial boards of Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Annals of Clinical & Laboratory Science, the Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, and the Journal of Clinical Ligand Assay.
As a leader in the field, he has held a number of prominent positions in professional organizations. He has formerly served as president of both the American Association of Clinical Chemistry and the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. He was elected a fellow of the NABC as well, and has maintained affiliation with organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Association of Clinical Scientists, the Endocrine society, and the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists.
In addition to his primary vocations, Dr. Demers has always made an effort to stay active in civic and community organizations. He is a member of the Knights of Malta, and since 1981 he has served as a Eucharistic minister of the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. He served as a trustee of Merrimack College, and has sat on the board of directors of the Hershey Symphony Foundation.
In light of his service and accomplishments, he has been honored and recognized many times over. Among the awards he has received are the Morton Schwartz Cancer Diagnostics Award from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, the Dubin Award from the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association Award. He has also been included in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in American Education.
