Born in Chicago in 1936 to parents Frederick M. Nichols and Keturah (Rollinson) Nichols, he developed an interest in the law as a young man. He attended Williams College, where he graduated cum laude in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts. He then studied at the esteemed Harvard Law School, where he completed a Juris doctor in 1961. From 1961 to 1962, Mr. Nichols held a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Hamburg in Germany. He was shortly thereafter admitted to practice in the state of New York, and has also practiced before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
After completing his formal education, Mr. Nichols worked as an associate with Cohen Swados Wright Hanifin Bradford & Brett LLP in Buffalo, New York. He was made a partner in 1965, and stayed with the firm until 2001. From 2002 to 2013, he was a partner with Kelly & Swetz LLP. He then began operating a solo private practice. In addition to his work in private practice, Mr. Nichols has worked as a public arbitrator for Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (Formerly NASD) and as a commercial arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Nichols has demonstrated his expertise in the legal field through a number of literary works. He is the co-author of "Corporate Acquisitions and Successor Liability," published in The Practical Lawyer, and the author of "The Broker's Duty To His Customer Under Evolving Federal Fiduciary and Suitability Standards," published in the Buffalo Law Review.
In addition to his work in the law, he has devoted a great deal of time to civic and community organizations throughout his career. From 1998 to 2002, he served as chairman of the Youth Services Committee and Neighborhood Services for United Way of Erie County. He also held membership with the Resource Management Committee for United Way of Buffalo. He further served as chairman of the Board of Directors for Child and Family Services in Buffalo, as an usher in the Episcopal Church, and as a Board member and Secretary of the Williamsville Rotary Club.
Mr. Nichols has maintained affiliation with such professional organizations as the New York Bar Association, the Erie County Bar Association, and the Financial Planning Counselors of Western New York. His career achievements have been recognized by Marquis Who's Who in several print publications, including Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
Mr. Nichols is the proud father of three daughters: Rebecca, Pamela, and Katurah. In his spare time, he has enjoyed canoe tripping, fly fishing, reading, and photography.
