Dr. Rollin James Hawley is a neurologist with over 40 years of experience in the medical profession. He is a respected authority in neurology, currently serving as a consultant at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. He also serves as director of the Sleep Laboratory and Clinic of the Twin County Regional Hospital, and teaches as a professor of neurology at several universities. Throughout his career he has served patients, taught students, authored numerous articles and papers, and has been recognized for his service and accomplishments many times.
Born to parents Rollin James Hawley and Janice Sedgwick Hawley-Kopf, Dr. Hawley developed an interest in medicine as a young man. He began on his career path at Fordham College, where he graduated in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in biology. He then moved on to the Drexel University School of Medicine to begin his medical education, and from there he received a Doctor of Medicine in 1967. After receiving his doctorate, he spent two years in the United States Army Preventive Medicine Corps, where he served as chief of Preventive Medicine for the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands, in Okinawa, Japan. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Georgetown University Hospital, and a residency in Neurology and Neuropathology at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital from 1971 to 1974. In 1974, Dr. Hawley was the recipient of a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at the Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow, Scotland.
After completing this fellowship, Dr. Hawley was appointed chief of the Neuromuscular Section of the D.C. Veterans Administration Medical Center, and additionally worked as a physician with the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic of Georgetown University. He held these positions from 1974 to 1992, when he became a neurology consultant at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg, Virginia. He has served in this capacity since then. In addition to his current role as a consultant, Dr. Hawley currently holds several other appointments. Since 2010, he has served as director of the Sleep Laboratory and Clinic of the Twin County Regional Hospital; and he has been an assistant professor of Neurology at Georgetown University, as well as a clinical associate professor at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. In the past, Dr. Hawley has served as president of the D.C. VA Medical Center Assembly of Physicians and Dentists, and for many years was a Sunday school teacher at the Holy Redeemer in Kensington, Maryland, and St. Jude's Parish in Christianburg, Virginia.
Throughout his career, he has published dozens of research papers in the field. Among his authored and co-authored works are "Hyperammonia possibly due to corticosteroids," "Computed tomographic patterns of muscles in neuromuscular diseases," and "CSF levels of norepinephrine during alcohol withdrawal," all of which were published in the Archives of Neurology (now called JAMA Neurology).
He has maintained affiliations with a number of professional organizations throughout his career. He is a life member of the AOA Honor Medical Society, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Neurology. He has also been a member of the American Academy of Electrodiagnostic and Neuromuscular Medicine, and the Virginia Medical and Neurology Associations.
For his work and accomplishments, Dr. Hawley has received a number of honors and awards throughout his career. He has received the Decorated Commendation Medal from the U.S. Army, two awards from the Montgomery County Government, as well as awards from the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America and the Okinawa Public Health Association. He has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, and in his spare time, he enjoys reading, writing, swimming, and travelling.
