Born in the Philippines in 1942 to parents Urbano Llanes Jose and Filomena Andres Jose, he developed an interest in medicine at a young age. He began his medical education at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1965, receiving a Doctor of Medicine. Soon after, he made his way to the United States, and continued his studies at Georgetown University, where he received a PhD in Kidney Disease and Hypertension in 1976. He completed an internship at Kings County Hospital, a residency in Pediatrics at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and held a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at the Children's Hospital of DC-Georgetown University Medical Center.
Throughout his career, Dr. Jose has gone on to teach at such universities as Nanjing University, the Military Medical University of China, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Georgetown University, and the George Washington University School of Medicine. At Georgetown, Dr. Jose was a professor of Pediatrics, Physiology, Biophysics, and pharmacology, director of the MD/PhD program, and a long-time chair of the Radiation Safety Committee. He has also been honored with several lectureships from various organizations: in 2003, he was named the Louis K. Dahl Memorial Lecturer by the American Heart Association; in 2007, he was named the Ernest H. Starling Lecturer by the Water and Electrolyte Homeostasis Section of the American Physiological Society; and he was named the Gertrude and Florian Nelson Cardiovascular Research Lecturer by the University of Mississippi in 2014.
Currently, Dr. Jose works with the George Washington University School of Medicine. Since 2002, he has served as a professor of pharmacology and physiology, and as an authority in the fields of hypertension and kidney disease, he is the head of the Laboratory for Hypertension Research, which is colloquially referred to as the 'Jose Lab.' There, he and his team's research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of hypertension, which affect over 40 percent of the world's population, and causes nearly 13 percent of all total deaths. Dr. Jose has also served as chair of the Hypertension and Microcirculation Study Section at the university. Throughout his career, he has regularly published research papers in medical journals, has a very successful track record of acquiring funding for his work, and has extensive experience reviewing grants and papers.
Dr. Jose has previously served as the president of the American Society Pediatric Nephrology, and he has been named a fellow of the Council on High Blood Pressure Research by the American Heart Association. For his achievements and contributions, Dr. Jose has been honored and recognized many times. Among the awards he has received are the Excellence Award for Hypertension Research from the American Heart Association Council on Hypertension, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University Of Santo Tomas Alumni Association of America, the T.H.O.M.A.S. Award For Medical Research from the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association, and the Manggagamot Award from the Philippine Medical Association. Additionally, he has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
He and his wife, Nora D. Jose, MD, have two children, Kristina M. Jose, MD and Maria E. Jose, MD. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the violin.
