Dr. Yeo is a director emerita of Stanford Geriatric Education Center who earned her title in 2010 after many years of service. Directing and serving as a principal investigator with the center beginning in 2001, the center itself is located on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California, and is a nationally recognized leader in the field of ethnogeriatrics, funded by the Bureau of Health Professions of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Formerly serving in a number of other roles, including coordinator of the National Collaborative on Ethnogeriatric Education between 1997 and 2002, she also lent her expertise as the director of special projects and as a core faculty member of the Stanford Geriatric Education Center between 1998 and 2001 and as a director and principal investigator of the center between 1987 and 1998. Dr. Yeo was notably responsible for the 1987 grant that went on to fund the Stanford Geriatric Education Center and for the development of a unique approach that would focus on teaching about the diversity of older adults.
Beginning her career as an assistant to the dean of women and a teaching assistant at Texas Tech University between 1963 and 1967 and instructor of sociology between 1967 and 1970, Dr. Yeo also taught various courses and served as the coordinator for Quest: Expanding Education for Elders, and a gerontology program at Chabot College in Hayward, California, between 1971 and 1985. Affiliated with Stanford Medicine at Stanford University for many years as a senior research scholar emerita since 1998, she was an adjunct associate professor, senior research scholar, senior lecturer and research associate for nearly two decades beginning in 1980. She was also a gerontology faculty member at San Jose State University in California, gerontology exchange faculty member at California State University in Hayward and part-time gerontology faculty member at Cabrillo Community College in Aptos, California, from 1982 to 1985.
Furthermore, Dr. Yeo held an appointment with the Institute of Aging at the University of Pennsylvania as an evaluator of the SHARE Award Program, which was funded by GlaxoSmithKline, from 1999 to 2003. During her career in academia, she taught a variety of courses and seminars, including Aging and Culture, Long-Term Care Issues, Pre-retirement Planning, Principles of Sociology and Sociology of Marriage and Family, among others. Early on in her career, Dr. Yeo was a caseworker for the Lubbock City-County Child Welfare Unit between 1955 and 1957. She also lent her expertise to a number of private and public organizations, was a lecturer for pre-retirement and health seminars between 1979 and 1990 and was a gerontological health education specialist, research sociologist and project director with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System between 1982 and 1984.
In addition to her primary career responsibilities, Dr. Yeo edited the book "Ethnicity and the Dementias," now in its third edition as of 2018. She has also been active on the editorial board for the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Clinical Gerontologist, the Journal of Aging and Ethnicity and the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences. Having contributed nearly 100 scholarly articles to professional journals, she has presented in the field more than 50 times for various professional organizations over the course of her career. Holding a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in sociology from Texas Tech University since 1955 and 1967, respectively, Dr. Yeo earned a Doctor of Philosophy in administration and policy analysis from Stanford University in 1982.
The former chair of the ethnogeriatric committee of the American Geriatric Society, Dr. Yeo has since been named an elected fellow of the organization. In order to keep abreast of developments in her field, she holds further membership with the American Society on Aging, the California Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics and the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education. Recipient of a Betty and James E. Birren Senior Scholar Award from the California Council of Gerontology and Geriatrics in 2007, she was presented with a Mildred Seltzer Award from the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education in 2004. In light of all her accomplishments, Dr. Yeo was previously selected for inclusion in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America.
