Licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Lucy Sweeney has run a successful private practice in Gallatin, TN, since 2007. Previously, she was an advisor to the Depression-Bipolar Alliance Support Group in Gallatin, TN, from 2014 to 2016. Prior to moving to Tennessee, she had a private practice in Blacksburg, VA, from 2000 to 2005, and one in Scotch Plains, NJ, from 1993 to 1999. From 2002 to 2003, she acted as an instructor in the department of women's studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Other roles she has held over the past several decades include as consulting psychologist, clinical supervisor and clinician for the Resolve Community Counseling Center, consultant to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in East Orange, NJ, psychologist for the Women's In-Patient Eating Disorder Program at Fair Oaks Hospital in Summit, NJ, and staff psychologist in the Women's Unit of Lyons Veterans Medical Center. Her first professional roles include as a child life coordinator for St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, and director of the Child Life Play Program at St. Luke's Medical Center in New York City. Outside of her primary endeavors, she was a professional actress from 1968 to 1973.

In the pursuit of a formal education, Dr. Sweeney earned a Bachelor of Arts in theatre arts from the University of Denver in 1968, a Master of Arts in developmental psychology from Columbia University in 1977, and a Doctor of Psychology from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in 1990. She completed her doctoral internship in clinical psychology at East Orange Veterans Medical Center in New Jersey, a practicum at Richard Hall Community Mental Health Center. Additionally, she obtained a Three Year Program Certificate from the Ackerman Institute for the Family.

Dr. Sweeney is the author of "Nashville Dreams," "Hard Time Blues," and "Creative Process in Acting: Empathy & Imagination." In 1989, she wrote "Twelfth Night and Shakespeare in Transition: Mourning & Developmental Themes," which was presented at the Conference on Literature & Psychology in 1989. She authored a dissertation titled "Eminent Women in Acting: Personality and Development of Five Actresses," which she co-presented with her dissertation chair, Nancy McWilliams, at the 97th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in 1989. Moreover, she is the co-author of "Hospitalization Enhances Creativity," which was published in 1979, co-author of "Getting Better: An Activity Book for Hospitalized Children" for St. Luke's Medical Center in 1978, and co-author of "Hospitalization as a Positive Experience for Poverty Children: Observations on Children from Low-income, Multi-problem Families," which was published in Clinical Pediatrics in 1977.

Dr. Sweeney is a current member of the American Psychological Association and a former member of the Dean's Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey as well as the New Jersey Psychological Association.

Due to her outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Sweeney has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. She received the John Weyandt Award for The Outstanding Theatre Student from the University of Denver and a Special Commendation for Outstanding Performance while she was completing the psychology doctoral program at Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, learning, walking, attending plays and concerts, museums, friends and traveling.
