ANN ARBOR, MI, January 04, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Michael M. Martin, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Martin celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Martin is an Arthur F. Thurnau professor and professor of biology emeritus who officially retired in May 1999 from the University of Michigan (UM) at Ann Arbor after 40 years on campus. Hired as an instructor in the department of chemistry in 1959, during his tenure he was promoted to assistant, associate and full professor, served as chairman of the division of biological sciences and was an associate dean and director of the honors program of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. His extraordinary efforts inside the classroom earned Dr. Martin the Arthur F. Thurnau professor title in 1996.
A pioneer in the study of the role of ingested fungi in the nutrition of plant-eating insects, elucidating how fungal enzymes found inside the insect gut are responsible for the ability of some insects to digest cellulose, Dr. Martin focused much of his career on the biochemistry, physiology and nutritional ecology of herbivorous insects. His research also led to the understanding of the mechanisms by which insects are affected by plant chemistry and caused a basic re-evaluation of general theories of the evolution of plant defense against herbivores. Furthermore, Dr. Martin was active in developing a popular course at UM on writing for biologists and for his contributions to improving writing in biology. As a result, he was honored as a fellow of the Gayle Morris Sweetland Writing Center of Literature, Science and Arts and received Literature, Science and Arts Excellence in Education Awards in 1991, 1997 and 1998.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Martin was active as a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the International Society of Chemical Ecology.
Dr. Martin was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow between 1958 and 1959, National Science Foundation faculty fellow in science at UM between 1976 and 1977, Sloan Foundation fellow between 1966 and 1968, and Fulbright research scholar between 1986 and 1987. He has notably held a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University since 1955 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois since 1958.
Born in Junction City, KS, Dr. Martin later married Joan Stadler of Columbia, Missouri, in 1965. He has two children, four grandchildren, and seventeen papers coauthored with Joan.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Michael M. Martin, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
