Amassing more than 35 years in the industry, she is now a professor emeritus of nursing and former chair of the department of nursing at the Medical College of Georgia. First hired as an instructor in the department of adult nursing in 1972, she later became an associate professor in the School of Graduate Studies in 1989, where she taught for 10 additional years. Earlier on, Dr. Prophit Lillis was a clinical instructor at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA, staff nurse and assistant head nurse at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA, and medical nurse specialist of hematology-oncology and neurology at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA.
During Dr. Prophit Lillis' tenure at the Medical College of Georgia, she served as the chairman of the Ph.D. comprehensive exam committee from 1990 to 1996. She has since contributed multiple articles to journals and chapters to books in her field, and she is a longtime member of several professional organizations. Dr. Prophit Lillis notably spent time on multiple committees for the Oncology Nursing Society and the American Cancer Society and was active with the Adria Oncology Nursing Society.
The recipient of a research grant and a Nutrition Project Award from the American Cancer Society in 1994, Dr. Prophit Lillis also received a research grant from the School of Nursing at the Medical College of Georgia and an Excellence in Writing Award from the Adria Oncology Nursing Society in 1991. She has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in American Nursing.
Highly educated, Dr. Prophit Lillis first earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northwestern State University in 1963, followed by a Master of Science from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1972 and a Doctor of Nursing Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1985. She is a registered nurse in Louisiana, California and Georgia.
