With more than a decade of professional experience in medicine, Dr. Panchal has served as a scientist with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center since 2016. In this position, she conducts health service research geared to understand stakeholders' preferences and surgical outcomes for approaches to reconstructive surgical care of cancer patients. In addition to cancer research, her area of focus also includes outcomes research in the field of gastroenterology specifically etiopathogenesis and therapeutic studies in inflammatory bowel diseases. Besides, she is well versed in assessing surgical outcomes in solid organ transplantation in patients with kidney and liver failure, and patient-reported outcomes in the setting of reconstructive and oncoplastic surgery. Her research expertise also extends to interdisciplinary collaborative research, and big data analysis such as American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, National Cancer Database, and United Network for Organ Sharing by Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.
Prior to obtaining her current position, Dr. Panchal worked as a research associate in the department of genetics and genomic science with Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 2014 to 2016, and as an independent investigator collaborating with the Einstein Healthcare Network from 2011 to 2013. Also, she held a research fellowship with Howard University Hospital Cancer Center from 2012-2013, during which she also served as an adjunct professor teaching nursing students with Medtech College. During 2011-2012, Dr. Panchal taught medical assistant students with Micropower Career Institute, and she was an observing physician with Wayne State University in 2011. Earlier in her career, she served as a resident medical officer and then a registrar providing critical cardiac care at the Wockhardt Hospital, an associate hospital of Harvard Medical International, Bangalore, India from 2007 to 2008, and a resident doctor with Baroda Heart Institute and Research Center from 2006-2007.
Dr. Panchal began her career as a student and then intern at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, obtaining her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2006. She then traveled to the United States, studying cardiovascular disease, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 2008-2009, serving as an extern in Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center during 2010-2011. She later earned a Masters of Public Health in outcomes research from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
As a respected voice in the field of medicine, Dr. Panchal has published numerous articles in professional journals in her areas of expertise and has presented her work at prestigious annual meetings of the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the American College of Gastroenterology. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her contributions, winning President Poster Presenter Awards at the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in 2016, a Blue Ribbon Award for outstanding poster presentation at annual research day in the Mount Sinai Healthcare System, and an All-Rounder Scholar Award. Entering the medical profession because she has always enjoyed helping people and studying science, Dr. Panchal was the first in the family to complete high school, college, and medical school before her twenty-fifth birthday.
