Dr. Lerner is an internist, chief of hematology and hemostasis, and professor of medicine and pathology at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY. First hired in 1967, he taught as an assistant professor before working his way up to full professor. He also served as acting chairman of the department of medicine between 1996 and 1997. Dr. Lerner formerly served as the chief of hematology at Westchester Medical Center between 1998 and 2018, taught at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California for two years beginning in 1965, and was a teaching assistant at New York University School of Medicine for one year beginning in 1961.

In the past few years, he has served as a consultant for RPR, served on the Speakers' Bureau for Pharmacia and Upjohn and was secretary for IPRO. He also consulted for the Food and Drug Administration between 1972 and 1977 and the National Institutes of Health in 1976. He has been serving as a member of the New York State Board of Medicine since 2012.
Dr. Lerner is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians, past president of the Society for the Study of Blood Hematology and longtime member of numerous other organizations where he served in numerous capacities. He is a member of the board of directors and secretary of the Island Peer Review Organization, member and former auxiliary member of the New York State Board of Medicine, and past president and current board of directors of the Westchester County Medical Society.
The recipient of a National Institute of Health Research Career Development Award in 1971, Dr. Lerner has been cited in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
First earning a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine from New York University in 1956 and 1960, respectively, Dr. Lerner then completed his postgraduate training at Bellevue Hospital, Montefiore Hospital and the University of Southern California. He notably served two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Married since 1958 to Helen Marjorie Halpern Lerner, Dr. Lerner has three children and six grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys sailing.
