Teaching at some of the best schools in the United States for close to 50 years, Dr. Tirro is a talented musician, composer, and writer who has been designated as professor emeritus by the Yale University School of Music since 2010. Beginning his tenure at Yale University in 1980, he focused his academic efforts in both the music of the Renaissance and the history of jazz. During his tenure at Yale University, Dr. Tirro also served as the dean of the School of Music between 1980 and 1989 and chaired the Doctor of Music Arts committee as well.
Dr. Tirro formerly excelled as the director of the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Duke University, where he also held the roles of an assistant and associate professor of music as well as chairman of the music department. He was a visiting lecturer of music history at the University of Kansas, a fellow of Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy, and simultaneously was both the University Chorus Director for the University of Chicago and chairman of the Music Department of the Laboratory Schools at the University of Chicago as well.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tirro has consulted for multiple organizations and institutions, including Howard University and the National Endowment for the Arts. He served as a visiting committee member for Howard University and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He has found success as a guest lecturer at multiple schools, such as Emory University, the University of California and Williams Colleges. Dr. Tirro has been a member of the advisory board for the Hixson-Lied Foundation at the University of Nebraska from 1992 to 2010.
Recognized for composing "American Jazz Te Deum" in 1970, Dr. Tirro also composed various other works in his earlier career. Some of these compositions have included "Church Sonata for Organ," "Sing a New Song" and "American Jazz Mass." He has been active as a jurist for the Aldo Parisot International Cello Competition in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was on the board of directors for the Center for Black Music Research, the Neighborhood Music School, the New Haven Symphony, and the Chamber Orchestra of New England, Dr. Tirro was a longtime member of multiple professional organizations including the Society for American Music, the Society for Ethnomusicology and the International Association of Jazz Educators. He further contributed on the executive board and council for the College Music Society and was a member of the council for the American Musicological Society.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Tirro has authored and co-authored several books, including his most recent, With Trumpet and Bible: The Illustrated Life of James Hembray Wilson. Published in 2009 through the College Music Society and Pendragon Press, the book is accompanied by an audio CD of related music. It was notably nominated for a 2009 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Award.
Additionally, Dr. Tirro was the editor for "Medieval and Renaissance Studies No. 9," and a contributor of multiple articles to scholarly journals and 38 biographies for "The World Book Encyclopedia." Furthermore, he served on the board of several professional publications such as the Journal of Music Theory. He has continued his service as the associate editor for the American National Biography since 1994.
Named in the Dictionary of International Biography and the Dictionary of American Scholars, Dr. Tirro has also been included in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Entertainment. He has received several grants from such organizations as the Duke University Research Council, Fulbright Senior Scholarship from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa in 2007, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Nebraska in 2007 and induction to the Omaha Central High School Hall of Fame. Recognized numerous times for his work as a musician, he accepted numerous Standard Composers Awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers between 1970 and 2006, among other recognitions.
Born in Omaha, Neb., Dr. Tirro excelled in high school and received scholarships offers from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Cornell University. Choosing Cornell, he studied engineering for three years before eventually returning to his home state to continue his studies at the University of Nebraska. Playing in a local symphony orchestra and the best jazz band in the area at that time, he boldly made the decision to follow his heart and change his major to music in his senior year. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in music education, followed by a Master of Arts in music at Northwestern University, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago. In 1980, he received an honorary Master of Arts from Yale University.
