Prior to obtaining this role, she was a professor and dean of nursing at Barry University from 1969 to 2002 and director of nursing services at Dominican Hospital from 1967 to 1969. Earlier in her career, Dr. Balcerski was head nurse and supervisor at Sisters Hospital from 1965 to 1967 and an elementary school teacher in Detroit, MI, and Miami Shores, FL, from 1960 to 1964.
Dr. Balcerski began her career as a student at Barry University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, cum laude, in 1965. She subsequently joined Wayne State University, where she completed a Master of Science in nursing in 1972. She concluded her studies with the University of Michigan, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education administration in 1981. Dr. Balcerski was certified as a registered nurse in the states of Florida and California, as well as in Grenada.
A respected voice in her industry, Dr. Balcerski has been affiliated with a number of organizations in her community. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, the American Association for Higher Education, the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives, and the American Association of University Women. In addition, she has been active with Sigma Theta Tau, Lambda Chi, Delta Epsilon Sigma, the Zoo Miami Foundation, formerly known as the Zoological Society of Florida, and the Smithsonian Institution.
Throughout her career, Dr. Balcerski has been recognized for her contributions, including having been awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Barry University. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in American Nursing, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
