She had her own private practice in Fremont, CA, from 2001 to 2008. Prior to that she was a senior associate for Baker McKenzie in Hong Kong from 2000 to 2001 and as an associate with Fish & Richardson in Menlo Park, CA, from 1999 to 2000. Her first professional role was as an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, CA, from 1997 to 1999.
During her years of her own law practice, Apple emerged as her biggest client and brought her into the company in 2008. This started her 7-year journey as an in-house counsel at various companies. She was the China Coordinator/Senior IP Counsel for Apple from 2008 to 2010. After that, she served as the CEO of a company in incubation for th Industrial Technology Research Institute. After launching the company into incubation, she went to Shanghai and served as the director of Intellectual Property Affairs at Asia Pacific for Eaton Corporation.
Ms. Chien-Hale left China in 2012 and started shifting her career focus back to North America. She first served as the associate director of the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy at the University of Toronto in 2014, and then as counsel with Brinks Gilson & Lione between 2015 and 2017.
Ms. Chien-Hale taught as an adjunct professor at Northwestern Polytechnic University in Fremont, CA, from 2003 to 2005. Additionally, she was a research scholar at Peking University Law School in 1995, and a visiting scholar at the IP Institute of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. She was also a foreign expert at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1995 and at Tianjin Foreign Languages University from 1986 to 1987.
Growing up, Ms. Chien-Hale had an interest in innovation, progress, and civil service. In order to prepare for her career, she pursued a formal education at several respected academic institutions. She first attended the University of California, Berkeley, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1983 and a Master of Arts in 1989. She continued her studies at the University of Hawai'i and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1994. Ultimately, she received a Master of Laws from Georgetown University in 1997. Subsequently, she was admitted to practice by the State Bar of California, the Hawai'i State Bar Association, and the District of Columbia Bar.
An active presence in her professional circle, Ms. Chien-Hale has maintained memberships with several organizations, including the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property. With the American Society of International Law, she spent time as co-chairman from 2012 to 2015, chair of the Pacific Rim Interest Group, and co-chair of the Intellectual Property Law Interest Group. A life fellow of the American Bar Foundation, she is a member and associate of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
Ms. Chien-Hale served as the chair of various committees with the American Bar Association since 2002 and was the co-chairman of the organization's Joint Task Force on People's Republic of China IP Law Amendments Council from 2016 to 2020. With the Silicon Valley-China Wireless Technology Association, she excelled as a legal counselor from 2006 to 2010 and as director of programs from 2004 to 2005.
Civically, Ms. Chien-Hale became a member of the Appeals Hearing Board for the City of San Jose, CA, a role she will hold from 2017 to 2021. Moreover, she was an Environmental Commission member in Altos, CA, from 2007 to 2009, member of the Committee of Bar Examiners with the State Bar of California from 2007 to 2008, and an elected member of the Neighborhood Board in Honolulu, Hawai'i in 1994.
A trusted voice in the field, Ms. Chien-Hale has authored several works, including novels "Three Travellers in India," and "Water Holes," which are available in both English and Chinese. She also contributed the chapters on intellectual property rights in multiple editions of "Doing Business in China." Additionally, she was a corresponding editor for International Legal Materials with the American Society of International Law. She has previously been featured in such honors publications as Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the world, and Who's Who of American Women.
