Dr. Nolan Porterfield has been recognized as professor emeritus at Southeast Missouri State University since 1995.

With 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Porterfield has been recognized as professor emeritus at Southeast Missouri State University since 1995. Prior to his retirement, he was a longtime professor of English and writer-in-residence at the university from 1978 to 1995, having also been an associate professor of English from 1974 to 1978, an assistant professor of English from 1970 to 1974, and an instructor of English from 1964 to 1970. From 1956 to 1958, he was a publisher at Lamesa Press-Reporter in Texas, where he was previously the advertising manager from 1955 to 1956. Earlier in his career, Dr. Porterfield was a reporter at the Gallup Daily Independent Newspaper in New Mexico in 1955.
Dr. Porterfield began his career with the United States Army, serving from 1958 to 1960. He subsequently pursued an education with Texas Tech University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He continued his studies with the university, completing a Master of Arts in 1964. He then joined the University of Iowa, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1970.
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Porterfield has been an active leader in his community. From 1981 to 1986, he served as a consultant to the Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press in Washington, DC. In addition, he is a member of the American Folklore Society, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, and the Texas Folklore Society. A contributor of short stories to national magazines, he has additionally written several books, including "A Way of Knowing" in 1971, "Jimmie Rodgers" in 1979, and "Last Cavalier: The Life and Times of John A. Lomax" in 1996. Likewise, he was an editor for "Trail to Marked Tree" in 1968 and "Exploring Roots Music" in 2004.
Throughout his career, Dr. Porterfield has been recognized for his contributions. His book "A Way of Knowing" was named Best Novel by the Texas Institute of Letters, who also named "The Life and Times of John A. Lomax" as the Best Nonfiction Book. Furthermore, "Jimmie Rodgers" won the Composers Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1979. Additionally, he has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
