Darleane C. Hoffman, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Though also interested in art, Dr. Hoffman was inspired to pursue chemistry because of a female chemistry teacher. Dr. Nellie Naylor, who supported the role of women in the sciences as early as 1946. After earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Iowa State University in 1948, Dr. Hoffman went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear chemistry in 1951 from Iowa State University. Later on in her career she was awarded honorary doctorates from Clark University (2000) and the University of Bern, Switzerland (2001). Commencing her career as a materials chemist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1952, she left in 1953 to join the staff of the Radiochemistry Group at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico, progressing from Staff member to becoming Associate Group Leader and Division Leader, leaving in 1984 to become Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Demonstrating unmatched professional focus, Dr. Hoffman served as chemistry professor there until attaining emeritus status in 1991 and was graduate school professor from 1993 to 2008. She was also director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's G.T. Seaborg Institute for Transactinium Science from 1991 to 1996 and faculty senior scientist with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1984 to 1991. Dr. Hoffman was also associated with the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Director's Fellow, and in 1997 earned the coveted National Medal of Science Award.

In addition to her primary professional accomplishments, Dr. Hoffman was a member of the Air Force Technology Applications Center Advisory Committee from 2007 to 2010, was on the advisory board for the Pacific Society of Radiochemical Science in 2009, and served in other notable leadership positions in her field as an advisor and speaker. She was president of the selection committee for the Nuclear Energy E Fuel Cycle Research and Development Committee (2010(. Dr. Hoffman was also featured in women in science conferences as a panel leader and speaker in 1975, 1979, 1983, 1997, and 2003.

A contributor of more than 280 articles to journals in her field, Dr. Hoffman was co-author of the book "The Transuranium People: The Inside Story" which was published in 2000. She was named Distinguished Lecturer by the Institute of Physical Research and Technology of Ames Laboratory in 1998 and was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Lecturer in 1987, and was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 2000. Among numerous other awards and recognitions, Dr. Hoffman was a keynote speaker for the American College of Surgeons in 2007, was awarded the Hevesy Medal in 2010, and the Iowa State University's John V. Atanasoff Research and Discover Award in 2007.

Dr. Hoffman is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of which she was a Council Member from 1995 to 1997, a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society and the American Institute of Chemists. She also belongs to the Radiochemical Society, which honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, the American Chemical Society, the Japan Society of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences, and several honor societies, often receiving awards for professional advancements. Dr. Hoffman has been honored in numerous publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
