HASTINGS ON HUDSON, NY, January 30, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Werner K. Maas, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Maas celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With an impressive 46 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Maas currently holds the title of professor emeritus at New York University, where he also worked as chairman of the department of basic medical sciences from 1974 to 1981, professor from 1963 to 1994, associate professor in microbiology from 1957 to 1963, and assistant professor in pharmacology from 1954 to 1957. At the inception of his career, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology and as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Public Health Service's Tuberculosis Research Laboratory at Cornell University.
In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Maas believes that his contributions to the discovery of regulatory genes that are essential for the proper functioning of all genes in the maintenance of living cells are crowning achievements of his career. In 1955, he discovered that the formation of the amino acid arginine was feedback-regulated by arginine in combination with the product of a regulatory gene. This single gene product controls the formation of the eight enzymes of arginine biosynthesis. In his autobiography "The Spiral of My Life: From Provincial Germany to Multicultural USA," he documents everything from his childhood in Germany to his groundbreaking research in microbiology. It can be purchased on Amazon.com.
An expert in his field, Dr. Maas holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Society for Microbiology, the Genetics Society of America, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he has also authored numerous other books, including "The New International World of Molecular Genetics, 1921-2016" in 2018, "Gene Action: A Historical Account" and "Gene Expression and Its Circulation."
For his outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Maas has been recognized many times, earning grants through the U.S. Public Health Service for more than 30 years. He has also been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the East.
