In 1990, the Public Service Company of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico honored Prof. Dorothy A. Simpson with an Educator of the Year Award.

Inspired by her mother and grandmother, Prof. Simpson has worked as a professor of speech communications and the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico Highlands University. She began her professional career as a teacher at West Las Vegas High School in 1966, eventually gaining further expertise at Santa Rosa High School and Questa Consolidated Schools. During this time, she has also been an educational consultant at Rancho Valmora in Valmora, New Mexico. Likewise, Prof. Simpson has continued to serve as an adjunct instructor at Luna Community College for the last 15 years.
Prof. Simpson pursued an education prior to these appointments, earning a Bachelor of Arts from New Mexico Highlands University in 1965. She then received a Master of Science from the University of Utah in 1968, and obtained a Doctor of Education from the University of New Mexico in 1989. She was certified in secondary education in the state of New Mexico, and holds a novice amateur radio operators license, which she received in 1996. She has also remained active in a Baptist Church since 1959, and has authored eight books as well as over 20 short stories and articles published in magazines and journals.
When she was six years old, Prof. Simpson wrote a poem titled "How Jesus Loves," which her mother, who was a writer herself and taught her how to write, submitted. This piece was accepted into the Counselor's Corner in 1951. In 1990, the Public Service Company of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico honored her with an Educator of the Year Award. She has been additionally featured in the sixth edition of Who's Who in American Education and several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
