Dr. F. Chris Garcia holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of political science for the University of New Mexico

Supported by 35 years of professional excellence, Dr. Garcia holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of political science for the University of New Mexico, where he formerly held the positions of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1980 to 1986, academic vice president from 1987 to 1990, provost in 1993, president from 2002 to 2003, and distinguished professor in 2005. Earlier in his career, he served with the New Mexico Air National Guard from 1957 to 1963, where he was later named an honorary commander in 2005. Over the years, he also gained valuable expertise with Zia Research Associates, Inc., which he founded and subsequently ran for over 20 years, as well as the North Central Association Higher Learning Commission and Think New Mexico, sitting on their board of directors.
An expert in his field, Dr. Garcia holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in government from the University of New Mexico and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science from the University of California, Davis. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he has maintained affiliation with the Western Political Science Association, the American Political Science Association, the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Western Social Science Association. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he authored the books "Political Socialization of Chicano Children," "The Chicano Political Experience," "State and Local Government in New Mexico," "Latinos and the Political Systems," "Governing New Mexico" and "Latino Voices," among numerous other publications.
In his spare time, Dr. Garcia enjoyed contributing to the betterment of the city of Albuquerque. He previously served on the Albuquerque Goals Commission and the Charter Revision Committee, and he sat on the board of directors of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. For his professional excellence, he earned a Distinguished Service Award from the American Political Science Association in 2001. In the coming years, Dr. Garcia intends to continue enjoying his retirement as professor emeritus.
