Dr. Stephen J. Florczyk currently works as an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

With 15 years of career experience, Dr. Florczyk currently works as an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Serving in this position since 2015, he is also the director of the Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering and Cancer Research Laboratory at UCF. He received a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship that supported his postdoctoral research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from 2013 to 2015. He previously held professional appointments at the University of Washington, including as a postdoctoral research associate in 2012, and as a graduate research and teaching assistant from 2006 to 2012. Prior to these roles, Dr. Florczyk was a graduate research and teaching assistant for Alfred University from 2004 to 2006, and a college co-op materials engineer for the Glaze Department of Kohler Co. in 2002.
Before embarking upon his professional pursuits, Dr. Florczyk began his education at Alfred University in 1999, eventually earning a Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering in 2004. He would continue his studies at Alfred University until 2006, when he received a Master of Science in Biomedical Materials and Engineering Science. Dr. Florczyk concluded his academic endeavors at the University of Washington, graduating with a PhD in Material Science and Engineering in 2012.
Dr. Florczyk found considerable research success, leading to the publication of 21 peer-reviewed research articles. He has notably contributed articles to several esteemed publications, including Biomaterials, Advanced Healthcare Materials, Journal of Materials Chemistry B, and Biomacromolecules. He has completed research projects utilizing biomaterial scaffolds fabricated from natural polymers for tissue engineering and cancer research, along with studying the cell-material interaction of adult stem cells in biomaterial scaffolds. In particular, Dr. Florczyk has found inspiration in both teaching and research, where he mentors and inspires students to develop research skills.
Attributing his success to perseverance and his goal-oriented process, Dr. Florczyk has been honored multiple times for his contributions to the field. He received a 2015 Materials Measurement Laboratory Accolade for Cross-Division/Cross-Organizational Unit Teamwork at NIST in recognition of his leadership of a collaborative interdisciplinary research project. In 2017, he received a Mayo Clinic-UCF seed grant to support development of biomaterial platforms for screening patient-derived cancer cells. Looking toward the future, Dr. Florczyk aims to garner further promotions and tenure at the University of Central Florida, as well as recognition as a national and international leader in his areas of expertise.
