Practicing medicine during a time when arthroscopic surgery was introduced as a new technique, he was very interested in learning and perfecting this procedure. Motivated by Robert Metcalfe, a pioneer in surgical methodology, Dr. Mayo also spent time learning under John Charnley in Manchester, a pioneer in joint replacements.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mayo was active with numerous professional organizations, including the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the Royal Society of Medicine, the International Arthroscopy Association and the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member and the past president of Sportopaedics. Locally, he contributed his expertise as the director of the Sports Medicine Clinic. Dr. Mayo also served on the board of directors of the Michigan National Bank, the executive board of the Detroit area council of the Boy Scouts of America and as the president of the Latter Day Saints Church in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
Dr. Mayo notably accepted a Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He has been featured in the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the Midwest. Dr. Mayo is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Making the decision to study medicine after high school, Dr. Mayo obtained a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario in 1958. Moreover, he was recognized as the valedictorian of his graduating class at the University of Western Ontario and was president of the university student council in his final year of medical school. Relocating to the U.S. to begin his career, Dr. Mayo completed his residencies at the Latter Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City, the Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City and the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
