Throughout his career he has served as a physician and medical educator, as well as a leader in the industry. Most recently, he served as an attending physician of Internal Medicine at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, part of Medisys ENY. He was born in Lipa City in the Philippines to parents Engracio Kalaw Villanueva and Rosario Dimaano Cuenca Villanueva. He developed an interest in medicine as a young man, and in 1958 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine & Surgery (MD) from the University of Santo Tomas in his home country, Manila, Philippines.
In 1967 he became a lecturer and faculty member in the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry at the University of Santo Tomas after his post doctoral fellowship at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
He moved into a role in the United States in 1970, leaving his teaching position at the University of Santo Tomas. He held the position of Medical Director of Medicine at Lutheran Hospital of East New York, Brooklyn (1973-1979). He then worked as an attending physician in Internal Medicine at St. Mary's Hospital of the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens (1979-1998). At St. Mary's Hospital he also was elected to the position of President of the Medical Board and assistant professor of Medicine at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn (1997-2004).
In 1998 Dr. Villanueva became as full time attending physician at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. He is also attending his Diaconate Studies at St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie Yonkers. He was ordained Permanent Deacon in 2008 and retired from medical practice in 2009. He pursued his Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) at St. James the Elder Seminary in Jackson, Florida, graduating Summa Cum Laude (2012).
Dr. Villanueva has held a number of leadership positions in the field. He served as president of the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association (1997-1998), president of the Medical Board, of Lutheran Hospital in East New York (1974-1978), President of the Philippine Medical Association in America, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania (1980-1981), Chapter president of the American College of International Physicians (1983-1990). Presently he is serving as executive director of the Royal Pontifical UST Medical Alumni Association in the State of New York and spiritual chaplain of the South Ozone Park EC Medical Lions Club of the International Lions Clubs. He has been publishing through the internet his daily gospel reflections since 2007.
He has been elected District Governor of Lions Club International (2001-2002) and president of the South Ozone Park Medical Lions Club (1992-1994)
In 2002 Dr. Villanueva established two perpetual scholarships for deserving minority students entering Brooklyn College, in Brooklyn, New York under the name Rev. Dr. E. Gary Villanueva. The Filipino Catholic Newspaper honored him with "The Filipino Catholic Award" in 2013.
He has authored a number of works in the field, including the "Intermediary Metabolism Procedure Manual." He has contributed a number of articles and research papers to professional conferences and journals as well as essays and editorials to other publications.
In light of his services and accomplishments, he has received a number of awards and honors. John Dewey University awarded him with an honorary Doctor of Science (ScD) Honoris Causa, and he received another Doctor of Laws (LLD) Honoris Causa from Adam Smith University. He was awarded "The Outstanding Thomasian" and Excellence in the Field of Medicine and Spiritual Ministry from People's Ball Philippine Fiesta (2011). He was also awarded the Excellence in Medicine and Clergy of the Year Award from the Order of Knights of Rizal (2015), and Melvin Jones Fellowship from the International Association of Lions Clubs. He was knighted Knight of Malta by the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He was also named a fellow by several organizations, including the American College of Physicians, (FACP), and the American College of Urgent Care and American Ambulatory Care.
Dr. Villanueva has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare as well as Who's Who in America, Who's who in the World and Who's who in American Education.
Rev. Dr. E. Gary Villanueva is married to Imelda, also an MD, and they have five children. Donna-Mae, PhD and presently Dean of Science at Pierce College in Los Angeles CA, Elaine, BS Marketing and teaching in Corona, CA, Professor Gerald, MD is chief GI at Bellevue Hospital under NYU, Paul, ESQ and Joseph ESQ both practicing lawyers.
