With more than 38 years of professional experience, Mr. Ward retired in 2006. He was an Audit Director with State Farm Insurance Companies in Bloomington, IL, from 1969 to 2006. In addition to his primary roles, he has contributed articles to professional journals, and he has authored and co-authored texts and book chapters in relation to his areas of expertise. In 1990, he co-authored "Computer Fraud Auditing: It Works" in the Internal Auditor Journal, which garnered the 1991 Thurston Award from the Institute of Internal Auditors. The co-authors were W. Max Rexroad PhD, CPA and Linda Leinicke, PhD, CPA, both professors of accountancy at Illinois State University. The article won the 1991 John B. Thurston Award, which was established by the Institute of Internal Auditors in 1951, and is presented in remembrance of The Institute of Internal Auditors first Chairman of the Board and an eminent authority and outstanding practitioner in the field of internal auditing. The Award is presented annually to the author(s) of the paper judged best among all those articles published in the Internal Auditor Journal during that year. Mr. Ward considers this achievement to be a highlight of his career. In addition, serving on the Board of Directors of the Institute of Internal Auditors for 13 years was especially enlightening as it allowed him to interact and learn from internal auditors all over the world.
Born in 1944 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Wiley Granger and Maxine Lucille (Culbertson) W., Mr. Ward attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1969. He continued his studies at Illinois State University, where he earned a Master of Business Administration in 1973. He is a Certified Internal Auditor and a Chartered Life Underwriter.
A respected leader in his field, Mr. Ward has been affiliated with a number of organizations. He was President of the Central Illinois Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and was also President of the State Farm Corporate Headquarters Activities Association. A Fellow of the Life Management Institute, he is also a former secretary of the Bloomington-Normal Sister Cities Committee. He was a court-appointed special advocate for the Child Protection Network and Children's Advocacy Center between 1997 and 2001, and from 2010 to 2013, Mr. Ward served as a member of the Dona Ana County Audit Committee.
Upon retirement, he and his wife, Debra S. Ward, packed up and headed to the southwest for the sunshine. They have two grown daughters: Wendy and Christine and one son, Stacey.
Mr. Ward has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
