Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Green earned a Bachelor of Science with high honors from Texas Tech University in 1978 and a Master of Theology with honors from Perkins School of Theology in 1982. He later graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in New Testament studies from the University in Aberdeen in 1985. In 2002, he concluded his studies with graduate coursework at the University of Kentucky. Having worked as a professor, the dean and the provost at Fuller Theological Seminary since 2007, Dr. Green began his career as a pastor at Welch and Wellman Churches in 1977.
As his career progressed, Dr. Green excelled as an associate pastor at Irving First Methodist Church and Pleasant Mound United Methodist Church and as the pastor at Peterhead Methodist Church. He then found success as professor and dean at the New College for Advanced Christian Studies from 1985 to 1992. Later active as professor at the American Baptist Seminary of the West as well as professor and provost at Asbury Theological Seminary, he has maintained involvement on the board of reference at Christians for Biblical Equality International as well as the advisory board of the Graeme Clark Research Institute. Dr. Green has also contributed to the Berkeley Emergency Food Project as the president of the board of directors.
Involved with the church from a young age, Dr. Green developed an early interest in church leadership, motivating his professional endeavors. He has been presented with numerous awards and recognitions, including the C. T. and Jesse James Bible Award in 1982 and the Albert C. Outler Award in Theology in 1981. He was recognized with an honorable mention for the John H. Ness Memorial Award in 1981. Dr. Green is also notable for being elected to Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas and the International Society for Science and Religion.
Due to his considerable knowledge, Dr. Green has written more than fifty books, including "Luke as Narrative Theologian: Texts and Topics," "Conversation in Luke-Acts: Divine Action, Human Cognition, and the People of God" and "Why Salvation? Reframing New Testament Theology." He has also authored numerous articles for professional journals, and was the founding editor of the Journal of Theological Interpretation. A fellow of the Institute for Biblical Research, Dr. Green is affiliated with the Society of New Testament Studies, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, along with numerous other professionally relevant organizations.
