Earlier in his career, he found success as a developmental engineer with General Electric and as a professor at Southern Methodist University. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he is affiliated with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Past President and Fellow), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Fellow) and the American Society of Civil Engineers. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Simpson has contributed to more than 300 articles published in professional journals on turbulence in separated and three-dimensional flows, novel measurement instruments, and unsteady submarine flow and behavior.
A registered professional engineer, Dr. Simpson pursued an education at the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. He continued his studies with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Dr. Simpson concluded his academic efforts at Stanford University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Simpson is especially proud of creating, patenting, and implementing designs (scAURTM) which prevent bridge scour around piers and abutments, which is a major cause of bridge failure over water. Looking toward the future, Dr. Simpson intends to continue to promote bridge scour prevention and to convey his knowledge to others.
