In addition to his primary role, he served as associate dean of the university from 1985 to 1990. From 1964 to 1968, he was an associate professor with the university. Earlier in his career, Dr. Cates was an assistant professor of medicinal chemistry from 1961 to 1964.
Dr. Cates began his career as a student at the University of Minnesota, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in pharmaceutical sciences in 1954. He then joined the United States Air Force, serving to the rank of captain from 1954 to 1956. He subsequently returned to his education with the University of Colorado, completing a Master of Science in 1958. He continued his studies with the university, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. Dr. Cates is a registered pharmacist in Colorado, Minnesota and Texas.
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Cates has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, where he served as a founder and chair of the section of medicinal chemistry, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the American Chemical Society. The former chair of the board of Great Southern Laboratories, Inc., he holds several patents for his advancements and he has written extensively in his areas of expertise.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cates has been honored for his contributions. He is a grantee of the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and the Welch Foundation. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, Rho Chi honorary chemistry society and Phi Lambda Upsilon honorary chemistry society. Dr. Cates has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the Frontiers of Science and Technology. He has also been named among American Men of Science and Men of Achievement.
Both Dr. Cates and his wife, Ruth, were the first members of their family to attend college. This example may have encouraged their successors to do likewise since the immediate family all graduated from college. This includes three Ph.D.s and two Masters out of a total of eight members.
