Dr. Galbraith retired from Auburn University in 1985 after 15 years of service. During her tenure, she served as a dean and professor, who also headed the School of Home Economics between 1973 and 1985 and taught and headed the consumer affairs department between 1970 and 1973. Beginning her career in academia in 1947 as a teaching assistant and research fellow at Purdue University in 1947, she also taught at the University of Illinois, where she chaired the textiles and clothing division on campus, and the University of Tennessee, where she taught textiles and clothing courses. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Galbraith worked in the field as a textile chemist with General Electric Company in Bridgeport, CT, from 1946 to 1947 and was a chemist with E.I. duPont de Nemours in Waynesboro, VA, from 1945 to 1946.
Active earlier in her career as a member of the taskforce on quality of living for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. Galbraith later devoted time as a member of the national advisory committee for the Flammable Fabrics Act. She also served as a member and chairman of the committee of nine for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
An elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, Dr. Galbraith is a past president of the Alabama Home Economics Association. She is a longtime member and section chairman of the American Home Economics Association, where she received a 1984 Outstanding Home Economist Award, and a longtime member of several other organizations, including ASTM International, the American Chemical Society and the Association of Administrators of Home Economics.
Contributing multiple articles to scholarly journals throughout her career, Dr. Galbraith notably served on the editorial board and chaired the policy board for the Research Journal of Home Economics.
Dr. Galbraith received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Purdue University in 1970. She has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1983, as well as close to 20 more editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of American Women.
Born in Lecompte, LA, in 1923, Dr. Galbraith grew up on a farm in a small town in central Indiana. Initially interested in textiles as a teenager, she attended a local high school that consisted of just 30 students in her graduating class. Unfortunately, her school didn't offer any chemistry classes, so she had to wait until she got to college to take her first course in the field. She has since earned both a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University in 1945 and 1950, respectively.
Married to Harry W. Galbraith in 1950, Dr. Galbraith has one son, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In her down time, she loves to read, complete puzzles and travel. She has also been known for her volunteer service, where she devoted 21 years to the East Alabama Medical Center between 1991 and 2012.
