Dr. Neil Donald Opdyke has been recognized as distinguished professor emeritus of the University of Florida since 2009.

With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Opdyke has been recognized as distinguished professor emeritus of the University of Florida since 2009, having been a distinguished professor from 1999 to 2009, professor from 1981 to 1999, and chair of geology from 1981 to 1988. Prior to obtaining these positions, he was a senior research associate at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory from 1964 to 1981. In addition to his primary roles, he served as a visiting professor with the University of Paris, an adjunct professor with Columbia University, and a part time lecturer with Hunter College.
Dr. Opdyke began his career as a student at Columbia University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1955. He continued his studies with Durham University in England, completing a Doctor of Philosophy in 1958. He subsequently held postdoctoral fellowships with Rice University from 1958 to 1959, with Australian National University from 1959 to 1960, and with the University of Zimbabwe from 1960 to 1963. Dr. Opdyke earned a Doctor of Science in 1982 from the Newcastle University in the UK.
A leading voice in his field, Dr. Opdyke has been active with a number of organizations in his areas of interest. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Geological Society of America, and the American Geophysical Union, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Geological Society of Australia. Dr. Opdyke has served on the editorial board of Quaternary Research.
Throughout his career, Dr. Opdyke has been recognized for his contributions. He has been a three-time Fulbright grantee, and he received a Petrus Peregrinus Medal from the European Geosciences Union. The American Geophysical Union gave him a Fleming Medal and named him a Cox Lecturer, and the Geological Society of America gave him a Woodland Award and a Stillwell Award. Additionally, he is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
