With a career in genealogy spanning close to 45 years, Mr. Roberts has been senior research scholar emeritus at the New England Historic Genealogical Society since 2005. He has previously served as director of publications, director of special projects, director of research and reference librarian. Mr. Roberts has served as a consultant for the Genealogical Publishing Company in Baltimore since 1983.
Studying both royalty and genealogy since childhood, Mr. Roberts earned a Bachelor of Arts at Yale University in 1965 and a Master of Arts at the University of Chicago in 1966. He also wrote an honors paper at Yale University on novelist E. M. Forster, with an extensive footnote on Forster's ancestry. Furthermore, Mr. Roberts has contributed more than 200 articles to various genealogical journals.
Authoring numerous books, Mr. Robert's 1984 "American Ancestors and Cousins of the Princess of Wales" isolated 300 notable distant cousins and introduced to the country the concept of notable distant kin, stating that everyone has millions of distant relatives including several hundred famous figures. Mr. Roberts more recently authored "Ancestors of American Presidents" in 2009 and 2012, "The Best Genealogical Sources in Print" in 2004 and 2012 and "The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants to the American Colonies, Quebec, or the United States" in 2018. Mr. Roberts is currently writing a book on notable Mayflower descendants.
Interviewed by various outlets on the Royal Wedding and his research on Meghan Markle's American ancestry, Mr. Roberts also served during George H.W. Bush's administration as unofficial White House genealogist. He has been the recipient of a Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Award by the Dallas Genealogical Society, and a Ralph J. Crandall Lifetime Achievement Award by the New England Historical Genealogical Society. Likewise, Mr. Roberts has been included in the 69th and 70th editions of Who's Who in America.
