With more than 35 years of professional excellence to his credit, Dr. Mital served as coordinator of human factors engineering at the University of Cincinnati from 1981 until his retirement from the industry in 2015. During this time, he simultaneously served as a professor of industrial engineering and physical, medical and rehabilitation from 1993 to 2015 and director of the Ergonomics Research Laboratory from 1981 to 2015. Earlier in his career, he worked as an assistant professor of industrial engineering with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville from 1979 to 1980 and as an associate professor with the University of Cincinnati from 1984 to 1992. In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of witnessing the success of his graduate students, who have gone on to become industrial and academic professionals themselves.
A registered professional engineer in Texas, Dr. Mital holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Allahabad in India, a Master of Science from Kansas State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Texas Tech University. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation as a fellow with the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, through which he won the Paul M. Fitts Award and the Jack A. Kraft Innovation Award. He is also a longstanding member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, through which he has also won multiple accolades, the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, where he served as chair of the industrial ergonomics technical group in the mid-1980s. He has also remained a member of such organizations as the Human Factors Society of Greater Cincinnati, where he was a former president, SAE International, the International Society for Occupational Ergonomics and Safety, and several honor societies.
Utilizing his vast array of knowledge in engineering, Dr. Mital has contributed to a number of works in an editorial capacity, including the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, the International Journal of Industrial Engineering: Theory, Applications and Practice, and the International Journal of Human Resource Development and Management. In addition, he served as an editor of several books, such as "Applications of Fuzzy Set Theory in Human Factors," "A Guide to Manual Materials Handling" and "Handbook of Expert Systems in Manufacturing and Production Engineering." In his spare time, he has contributed to his community through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock, TX, since 1977.
In light of his excellence in the field, Dr. Mital earned grants through the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, and the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation. He won the David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award, the Ergonomics Award, and the Eugene L. Grante Award through the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, having also been honored with the Outstanding Contributions Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the Ralph R. Teetor Award from SAE International, and the Distinguished Accomplishment Award from the International Society for Occupational Ergonomics and Safety. Likewise, Sigma Xi also gave him a Distinguished Research Award.
As a testament to his success, professional publications such as Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering have also honored him for his work.
