Recently Ms. Margaret Ann Shimmin was interviewed by the Gallup Poll regarding the quality of health care in the United States. It included recommendations for improvement of our health care system.

After accruing 45 years of practiced experience in nursing, Ms. Shimmin retired from her role as a nurse program specialist for the diabetes intervention program at the Escambia County Health Department in Florida in 2007. She began her nurse practitioner career in 1983 at the Escambia County Health Department where she worked in the various clinics and the jail where she did acute care for the inmates. In 1989, she was promoted to the District 1 HRS District Program Office where she served as a liaison between the county health departments and the State Health Office. In 1996 that office was closed due to legislative reorganization. She also spent time as a nurse program specialist in Occupational Safety and Health Administration staff training and in quality assurance. Furthermore, she gained a plethora of expertise throughout her career with St. Luke's Hospital in North Dakota, Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola in Florida, the Escambia County Public Health Unit in Florida, District 1 Health and Rehabilitation Services and as a captain in the United States Army Nurses Corps. Having accomplished much over the years, Ms. Shimmin considers the highlight of her career to have been selected to represent the State of Florida Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners on the State Health Office's Healthy Start Advisory Committee. Their function was to take the 1991 legislation and develop it into a program that screened all pregnant women and infants for risk factors. This model was adopted by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to be used nationwide.
Prior to embarking on her career, Ms. Shimmin received a diploma in nursing from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1962. Following this accomplishment, she earned a Bachelor of Social Work from The University of West Florida in Pensacola in 1978 and a certificate in OB-GYN nurse practitioner studies from the The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1983. Concluding her education with a Master of Public Health from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1986, Ms. Shimmin was licensed as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the State of Florida until her retirement. She was previously licensed as a nurse in Alabama, Florida and North Dakota. She was also the holder of two national certifications. The first was a certification in Maternal-Gynecological-Neonatal Nursing presented by the American Nursing Association and Nurses Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1978. The second was a certification as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner presented by the Nurses Certification Corporation in 1983.
Though she is now retired, Ms. Shimmin maintains affiliation with a number of professional organizations in order to keep abreast of developments in her field. She is a former member of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses; the Florida Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association, the Florida Perinatal Association and the National Perinatal Association, among many others. Recently Ms. Shimmin was interviewed by the Gallup Poll regarding the quality of health care in the United States. It included recommendations for improvement of our health care system. In light of all her accomplishments, Ms. Shimmin has previously been selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Nursing, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
