Since 2009, Dr. Hess has been designated as a professor emeritus in the department of comparative biosciences in the college of veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois. For 23 years, Dr. Hess had been teaching on campus, during which time he held the posts of the chair of the morphology division in the department of veterinary biosciences, the director of the center for microscopic imaging and the director of the center for electron microscopy. A visiting professor at the University of Missouri, Dr. Hess also excelled as an adjunct scientist at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center at Emory University in 1992.
Prior to attaining a faculty position at the University of Illinois, Dr. Hess worked as a postdoctoral scientist with the Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, N.C. He also found success as a graduate assistant at Clemson University and a research associate at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and Washington University in Saint Louis. An invited symposium keynote speaker on epididymal toxicology at the First European Congress of Toxicological Pathology in Hamburg, Germany in 2003, Dr. Hess also participated as a symposium lecturer at the First European Congress of Andrology in Laquila, Italy in 2000 and as a plenary lecturer at an international workshop on estrogens and male reproduction in Crotone, Italy in 1999.
An expert in reproductive toxicology, Dr. Hess has focused much of his studies on testicular growth and development, estrogen regulation of the male reproductive tract, spermatogonial stem cell regulation and the effects of gene disruption on spermatogenesis and efferent ductule structure and function. He has also completed extensive studies on how chemical substances affect reproduction and was responsible for creating "STAGES," a computer program that tracks germ cells of the testis in time. Affiliated with several honor societies, Dr. Hess is a member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the Endocrine Society, the Society of Toxicology and the American Society of Andrology, for which he previously held the roles of an executive council member, the treasurer and a secretary.
Dr. Hess initially pursued an education at the University of Missouri, earning a Bachelor of Science in education and zoology, cum laude, in 1971. He continued his studies with a Master of Science in physiology in 1975, also from the University of Missouri. Dr. Hess concluded his academic efforts at Clemson University in 1983, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in animal physiology.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Hess has contributed chapters to 21 books and approximately 180 research articles to peer-reviewed journals. His 2016 manuscript in Endocrinology, titled "Membrane-Localized Estrogen Receptor 1 Is Required for Normal Male Reproductive Development and Function in Mice," was selected as one of the top endocrine papers. Moreover, Dr. Hess has authored close to 20 invited reviews and monographs.
Honored with multiple awards throughout his career, Dr. Hess accepted a 2013 Distinguished Service Award and 2000 Presidential Merit Award from the American Society of Andrology. Obtaining a Certificate of Merit from the University of Missouri, he also was presented with a 2000 Pfizer Award for Research Excellence, a 1997 Research Excellence Award and a 1995 Levine Award for Research Excellence from the University of Illinois in the college of veterinary medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Hess was recognized as a Richard Higgins scholar, a Fidelity Education scholar, and a Melvin Jones fellow of the Lions Club International Foundation.
