Dr. McShefferty is a retired research executive, pharmaceutical scientist and consultant who served 18 years as president of the Gillette Research Institute in Gaithersburg, Maryland, until he retired in 1997. He previously held numerous other significant roles, including vice president of research and development of family products at International Playtex Inc. in Paramus, New Jersey, and as director of research for Janssen Pharmaceuticals in Piscataway, New Jersey, and director of pharmaceutical development for Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp. in Raritan, New Jersey, both now subsidiaries of Johnson & Johnson Services Inc. Dr. McShefferty began his career in the field in 1957.

An elected fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, Dr. McShefferty is also a member and former board of directors member of the Industrial Research Institute and the American Management Association. He is a longtime member of the American Chemical Society, the American Pharmaceutical Association, the New York Academy of Sciences and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, among others.
Completing his education in Scotland, Dr. McShefferty earned a Bachelor of Science, with first class honors, and a Doctor of Philosophy, with majors in chemistry and pharmacology, from the University of Glasgow in 1953 and 1957, respectively. In light of all his accomplishments over the course of his career, he has previously been featured in Who's Who Among Human Service Professionals, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
Born in Akron, Ohio, Dr. McShefferty has been happily married to his wife, Glenna Gloria Childs, since 1959. He has two children, a son who died of cancer and a daughter, and two grandchildren. In his spare time, Dr. McShefferty enjoys traveling, building scale model wooden ships and reading.
He has been active as a longtime member of Rotary International, an organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to promote humanitarian service and advance goodwill and peace around the world.
