He also found success in varying educational roles with Mukogawa Women's University, Matej Bel University and the Belarusian State University, as well as the International Congress of Onomastic Scientists. Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith completed service in the United States Army from 1957 until 1960.
An expert in his field, Dr. Smith initially pursued an education at Reed College, earning a Bachelor of Arts. He continued his studies with a Master of Arts from the University of Nevada. Dr. Smith eventually concluded his academic efforts at the University of Delaware, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in Renaissance literature.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Smith is affiliated with the Modern Language Association, the Mountain Modern Language Association, and the International Society of Dialectology and Geolinguistics. Likewise, he is a member of the American Association of University Professors, the American Dialect Society and the American Name Society. During his spare time, Dr. Smith has contributed to his community through the Eastern University of Washington Running Team.
For his outstanding work, Dr. Smith was presented with a grant from the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additionally, he was featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in American Education.
