Backed by nearly 70 years of practiced industry experience, Dr. McHugh serves as consultant with Genesee Hospital, the National Institute of Dental Health, Columbia University and the National Institutes of Health, and as a dentist at Strong Memorial Hospital. At the inception of his career, he served as a house surgeon in oral surgery at Dundee Dental School in Scotland in 1950. Over the years, he gained valuable expertise in dentistry and dental education with the Eastman Dental Center as director, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry as a professor of clinical dentistry and dental research, the University of St. Andrews Dental School as a professor, senior lecturer and department head, and the Royal Dental School and Hospital as an instructor in the department of operative dentistry and lecturer in periodontology and pathology.
A fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Association for Dental Research, Dr. McHugh holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, cum laude, from the University of St. Andrews, where he also earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the International Association of Dental Research, where he served as former president, the American Dental Association, the British Society of Periodontology, and the British Dental Association, where he was president of the North Scotland branch in the late 1960s.
With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. McHugh has helped to edit such publications as "Systematized Prevention of Oral Disease," the Journal of Periodontal Research, the Journal of American College of Dentists and the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. He has also contributed myriad articles to professional journals and contributed as a member of the editorial boards of such journals as Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology and Preventive Dentistry.
In light of his excellence in the field, Dr. McHugh has earned features in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He has also been a frequent grantee of the National Institutes of Health and the Eastman Kodak Company, as well as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Notably, he earned an honorary doctorate from Lund University in Sweden in 1995. Looking ahead, Dr. McHugh intends to continue parlaying his extensive array of knowledge to others.
